Manchester United vs Aston Villa

Only a win will be good enough to take United back to the top of the table after Benayoun's last-gasp winner for Liverpool yesterday at Craven Cottage. A win for Aston Villa would see them go within 3 points of Arsenal and the final Champions League spot.
Manchester United have lost just one of their last 6 League games at home - the 4-1 thumping courtesy of Liverpool some weeks ago. More importantly, the Champions have lost their last 2 consecutive League games - they have not lost 3 in a row in the League for nearly 7 years. United have scored 31 and conceded just 9 in 14 home games this season - but their striking prowess has taken a blow with Wayne Rooney suspended and Dimitar Berbatov sidelined for 2 weeks with an ankle injury. Ever-reliable Carlos Tevez will be needed more than ever and will finally get a chance to prove himself in front of the Old Trafford crowd when it really counts. Gary Neville may be in contention for a start after coming through a reserve game - finally putting an end to the Red Devils' right back misery. Scholes and Vidic are both also suspended for this game meaning Evans may partner Ferdinand in defense, whilst Fletcher and Anderson may both play alongside Michael Carrick in a 4-5-1 into 4-3-3 formation. Ryan Giggs on Ji-Sung Park will likely be given the nod on the left hand side - both offering more stability to the formation than Nani.
Villa are still without Wilfred Bouma whilst Heskey picked up a fresh injury on International duty. This should see Agbonlahor reclaim his starting place up front alongside John Carew.
The Villains have taken 12 points from their last 6 away games (due to 2 defeats in their most recent 2 travels). They will look to bounce back from their heavy destruction at the hands of Liverpool and keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Their is a lot riding on this game for both teams which should make for a cagey encounter. Both teams would have been grateful for the International break as their respective forms had started to deteriorate.

If there was ever a good time to face Manchester United, this is it. The Red Devils haven't been under this much pressure for a very long time and they are now without Nemanja Vidic, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. Add this to the fact that Ferguson may be tempted to rest some players ahead of a huge midweek Champions League tie and you have the makings of a giant killing. Aston Villa will look to Barry, Ashley Young and Agbonlahor to set this game off at a high tempo and to try to catch United off guard. Manchester United will need World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo to step up to the plate and prove his titles to be just. Carlos Tevez will need to erase Argentina's 6-1 demolition from his memory and to take his chances if and when they come.
Aston Villa's best angle of attack will be down the flanks (more specifically, their left). If Ashley Young can get room and break at the short-of-match-practice Gary Neville (or the incompetent back-up full back Wes Brown), he will more than likely possess to much skill and pace. This will allow the young English winger to either angle a high ball into John Carew or pull the ball back for the explosive Agbonlahor (10 goals this season). Young Jonny Evans may struggle to live with the presence of Villa's number 11 - calling upon the help of Rio Ferdinad - freeing up John Carew. Gareth Barry will not be able to dictate play as he usually likes to as United will pack the midfield when defending. Michael Carrick will be responsible for preventing his opposite number spreading the play out wide.

Manchester United vs Liverpool (1-4) Analysis

Long-ball Liverpool Lucky As Title Race Heats Up

"Manchester United were destroyed by Liverpool". That's what the score line suggests anyway. The truth of the matter is this was an evenly fought game in which the rub of the green and the bounce of the ball almost literally made the difference.

Manchester United took the lead in the first half when Carlos Tevez poked a majestic through ball in to Ji-Sung Park in the Liverpool area. The South Korean got a touch of the ball, a heavy touch, and was never going to keep the ball in play. This doesn't change the fact the Pepe Reina clattered into Park late and fouled him. A penalty was the right decision and Ronaldo dispatched coolly.

Liverpool then secured a most unflattering equalizer. A clearance turned assist from the Liverpool defense bounced awkwardly for Nemanja Vidic after he opted against a first time header away. This let Fernando Torres steal the ball away from the usually rock solid Serb and slot smartly past van der Sar - although the big Dutchman did get a touch sending the ball perilously close to the far post.

No complaints about Liverpool's 2nd goal. A through ball to Steven Gerrard was misjudged by Patrice Evra who was forced to dive in recklessly from behind on the Liverpool captain conceding a sloppy penalty. Gerrard stepped up and placed the ball into his less preferred right hand side of the net van der Sar again getting a touch.

At half time, I was annoyed to have seen Rio Ferdinand booked for a nothing tackle and Mascherano and Lucas evade booking despite 3 or 4 rash challenges each. They say referees are judged on the big decisions they make, I think Alan Wiley allowed the Liverpool holding midfielders to break up United attacks on many occasions - more of then not illegally. This took the fluidity out of the Champions game and never really allowed Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez to find their rhythm.

Manchester United began turning the screw in the second half and looked like they could secure a big draw. Skrtel and Mascherano had joined Carragher in Wiley's yellow card book and the Old Trafford crowd were coming alive. Liverpool still posed threats on the break through the pace of Torres but never really looked like scoring again. Sir Alex Ferguson brought on the experienced trio of Scholes, Giggs and Berbatov for Park, Carrick and Anderson but within minuites United were on ten men. Nemanja Vidic was adjudged to be the last man when he brough down Steven Gerrard just outside the United penalty area. At the time it looked like the right decision and I've seen nothing to change my mind since.
The worse was still to come for Manchester United as Fabio Aurelio stepped up to dispatch the free kick beautifully - van der Sar left rooted to the spot. It was an unstoppable strike but I can't help thinking United's keeper got his wall placing all wrong. Aurelio's ability to find the top corner rendered his wall's jumping useless and meant 25% of the goal was an open target. Perhaps United weren't aware of Aurelio's set piece abilities and had only prepared for Gerrard's free kicks?

The final insult to injury was added by Dossena in the 90th minuite when he elegantly looped a long ball over the advancing van der Sar with his first touch. The Italian rounded of a performance engineered solely towards winning a football match, neglecting the fluidity of football.

But the Liverpool fans seemed overjoyed with their long ball football and seemed to enjoy winning ugly.

An unusually high amount of media mind-games has fueled what some are calling a top of the table 6 pointer, but most are calling the title decider. Not a title decider in the sense that the winner of the match will win the League, rather "decider" in the sense that if Liverpool lose, their race is over. Over-rated moan man Rafa Benitez himself has said "If we don't win it will be very difficult to win the title. If we want to be in the title race we have to win at Old Trafford". A win for Manchester United would see the Champions go 10 points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand. That's potentially a 13 point gap with 9 games to go. Perhaps a loss will do Rafa Benitez a favour and pre-vindicate the shocking team selections he is likely to make in the League next month ahead of Liverpool's Champions League games. A Liverpool win would put them 4 points behind United and would add pressure to the Red Devils' already tricky game-in-hand at Craven Cottage.
Both sides know that Chelsea play their weekend game tomorrow vs hit-and-miss Manchester City in what should be an unpredictable encounter. Points tomorrow are not guaranteed for the Blues so both Ferguson and Benitez would love to register 3 points today and put their feet up tomorrow.
Liverpool have dropped 14 points on the road this season whilst United have dropped just 2 at home. United have also only conceded 5 goals at home and have racked up 11 successive League wins.
Liverpool are without Agger and Benayoun though Gerrard and Torres are both match fit.
Manchester United have no new concerns but are still without Neville, Rafael, Brown and Hargreaves - O'Shea likely to keep his right back position.
Like I say in all big games - don't be surprised to see Ji-Sung Park in the starting lineup. His high work rate and defensive awareness has him in Sir Alex's good books. Carlos Tevez and Anderson are both being slated for starts, though I don't see why Ferguson would waver from the solid Carrick and Scholes partnership. Wayne "I hate Liverpool" Rooney seems fired up for this encounter and given his recent run of goals he is a must to start. Evra, Ferdinand and Vidic will join O'Shea at the back with van der Sar hoping to produce another clean sheet behind them. The final position will be taken by either Berbatov or Tevez - respectively the provider and scorer of United's goal vs. Liverpool earlier this season. I haven't seen enough from Berbatov of late to show that he will take his one chance if it falls to him - though his first touch and footwork midweek was immense. Carlos Tevez's West Ham saga is reportedly and finally over - allowing him to focus on his football and his new contract. This could be the perfect time for Sir Alex to show faith in the Argentine. Also, I believe Tevez will offer more wide support for Park (if picked), compared to Berbatov who is more inclined to stay central, hold up the ball and distribute out wide.
Throw your stat books out the window, anyone can win this. As far as United are concerned, Carrick will have to be at the top of his game to avoid being squeezed into a Gerrard-Alonso sandwich. He and Scholes will be key to keeping Manchester United's game flowing and to unleash the wide men.

Manchester United 2 - 0 Liverpool

Champions League : Final 16 Review

English dominate as Italians fail

The final 16 saw holders Manchester United follow Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea into a Quarter Final draw which includes underdogs Villareal and Porto as well as attacking maestros Bayern Munich and Villareal. And don't forget, the draw is now open - meaning anyone can face anyone. We may at last see the dream re-match between Manchester United and Barcelona or we could even see a goalless extravaganza between Villareal and Liverpool (who would use more holding midfielders?)
The two teams who stood out most to me had to be Bayern Munich and Barcelona. They are the teams to avoid. Bayern, in my humble opinion, have the quickest, most incisive side in Europe. This, added to the quality of Ribery, Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Klose, Toni and Lahm, completes a phenomenally under-rated line-up.
Barcelona showed yesterday that they are something like their best again after a few stutter in La Liga. Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o are back to their explosive best and Lionel Messi (undoubtedly the greatest footballer of our time) will only get better. The vision and passing of Xavi and Iniesta is also aided by the attacking prowess of the now legendary full back Dani Alves.
Bayern and Barca are the teams to avoid in the final 8. Porto, Villareal and (dare I say) Arsenal are the teams you want to draw. The draw will be made on the 20th March.

Champions League Predictions (11/03/09)

FC Porto vs Atletico Madrid

The first leg saw Atletico twice squander leads to gift Porto the away goals advantage (2-2). Despite this, Atletico still have to be the fancied side to progress in what is sure to be a cagey affair. Much pressure will be on El Comandate (the commander) Lucho Gonzalez to not only drive his team forward mentally, but to try and pick the lock of Atletico's defence. Madrid (the red one) are now known for their "you score 6, we'll score 7" attitude which served them well in the first half of the season. They are now however leaking too many goals for hit-and-miss legend in the making Sergio Aguero and his familiar partner in crime Diego Forlan to convert.
It's all about the Argentines in this game - they'll decide the result. In the blue corner, Lucho Gonzalez and Lisandro Lopez. In the red and white, Maxi Rodriguez and Sergio Aguero. Quality players on show, a tough one to call.

Prediction
1:2 (3:4 agg.)
Atletico Madrid go through

Barcelona vs Lyon

"Attack is the best form of defense" - these the words of Pep Guardiola ahead of a tricky 2nd leg against flamboyant opposition. Lyon played their hearts out in leg 1 and were more than a match for the much favoured Barcelona for the majority of the game. There has been a lot of talk about Barcelona's recent form - two losses in three League games possibly indicating the wheels are wobbly (if not falling off).
Never before has there been so much panic over set-pieces but Guardiola thinks Juninho "has all the time in the world to decide where to put the ball and enough talent to pull it off". I agree. Juninho Pernambucano that is - in case any Middlesbrough fans were wondering. The same Juninho who once said free kicks were "like penalties" for him.
Lyon will be brave but any mistakes and the Nou Camp will swallow them whole. Barcelona may be about to click into gear and give us a masterclass reminiscent of those seen months ago in the group stages.

Prediction
2:0 (3:1 agg.)
Barcelona go through

Roma vs Arsenal

Toure, Nasri, Denilson, Eduardo and Walcott may all feature for Arsenal - though Adebayor misses out. Many experts are giving this game to Roma. They think the Italian outfit are too strong and the hostile Italian crowd will be too imposing. Then again, they said that this time last year when Arsenal faced Milan. Could Theo Walcott's explosive pace off the bench be a critical factor? Eduardo has looked majestic since his return and will be eager to reannounce himself on such a grand stage. Arsenal are resigned to a top 4 shootout in the League this season which has given the Champions League even greater importance. This could be just what the "can't hit the back of a barn door" Arsenal of recent weeks need to shock their season back into life. Remember, Arsenal just have to avoid defeat.

Prediction
1:1 (1:2 agg.)
Arsenal go through

Manchester United vs Inter Milan

5 years and two days ago at Old Trafford. A little known Portugese manager broke United hearts and wasn't afraid to celebrate. Now, Jose Mourinho has become one of Alex Ferguson's greatest rivals. The Scot has only gotten the better of Mourinho once, though he insists that isn't important.
United will regret not securing an away goals advantage after an impressive San Siro display, and a score draw will now put Mourinho's Inter through.
Both teams have defensive worries - though Manchester United have been aided by Rio Ferdinand's passing of a fitness test. O'Shea is set to start in the troubled right-back spot. Inter are without Christian Chivu, Walter Samuel, Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso. We may then see an Inter back four of Santon, Rivas and Maicon with either Zanetti, Maxwell or Cambiasso filling the final defensive spot (not as weak as Mourinho will have you believe).
Manchester United will look to kill this game off early with a view to possibly resting one of two big guns ahead of the clash vs Liverpool. We may therefore see starts or special guest appearances from Ji-Sung Park, Darren Fletcher, Carlos Tevez, Johnny Evans, Nani and Anderson.

Champions League Predictions (10/03/09)

Bayern Munich vs Sporting

This tie is as good as over and Sporting have little left to play for but pride. They might not even get that though as the ever-impressive Bayern take a five away goal lead to the Allianz arena. Expect Klinsmann to rest two or three of the top talents and expect Paulo Bento's Sporting to be aggressive from the outset. I said it last time and I'll say it again : expect goals.

Prediction
2:2 (7:2 agg.)
Bayern go through

Juventus vs Chelsea

Claudio Ranieri has called upon Juve's supporters to "intimidate Chelsea" in what could be the to-the-wire game of the round. Chelsea were more than matched by the Italian giants at Stamford Bridge but were fortunate to avoid conceding an all important away goal. Juventus will certainly be favourites on the night but one goal could but the Londoners through.

Prediction
2:1 (2:2 agg.)
Chelsea go through on away goals

Panathinaikos vs Villareal

Possibly the least appealing game to the UK audience - though lovers of old school football may like what they see. This will either break out into a frenzy or slip into a tactical chess style game-play. Panathinaikos' away goals gives the underdogs hope but I can't help thinking Villareal's individual qualities will shine through.

Prediction
0:2 (1:3 agg.)
Villareal go through

Liverpool vs Real Madrid

The tie of the night - on paper. Two of the greatest sides in the competition's history (with one notable big red exclusion) clash in front of the Anfield anything-can-happen crowd with the (slight) underdogs holding a one (away) goal advantage. That away goal could be the key. Liverpool are very hard to beat at home, especially if they make it "one of those European nights" - and that's what Madrid have to do. A draw is no good. The reverse side of the coin says Real may come up against the same Liverpool that deploy two holding midfielders from the offset and is (tentatively) accused of "hoofing" the ball. If that Liverpool turn up (the one that drew at home with Everton, Man City, West Ham and Hull), Madrid will have a field day.

Prediction
0:2 (1:2 agg.)
Real Madrid go through

Manchester United vs Fulham ; FA Cup Highlights, Draw

Manchester United put in another classy performance to shrug of Fulham 4-0 at Craven Cottage. Wayne Rooney and Ji-Sung Park killed the game off after two greatly contrasting first half goals from Carlos Tevez. Ronaldo, Scholes, Berbatov and Giggs were all rested - indicating Sir Alex has one eye on the upcoming Champions League 2nd leg with Inter Milan and another on Liverpool in a week's time. The only problems for Manchester United came in the form of injuries to Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea. By all accounts, Ferdinand is 50/50 to make the midweek Champions League starting line-up and O'Shea is very unlikely. This leaves a problem in the right back position for United who are already missing Gary Neville,Wes Brown, Owen Hargreaves and Rafael through injury. Saturday's game against Fulham saw young Richard Eckersley finish the game at right back - indicating just how desperate Ferguson is. Perhaps Fabio da Silva will be risked at right back - or maybe Darren Fletcher will be started out of position.

The good news for Manchester United today is that of the FA Cup draw. The Reds avoided both Chelsea and Arsenal/Hull, receiving a home draw vs. Everton.

Title Race Over?

Manchester United last night secured an unconvincing yet impressive victory over doom-destined Newcastle. It was another reminder of the Reds' relentlessness in the closing stages of any title campaign. Will they win all 5 trophies?

Is the title race over? Tell us your thoughts.

Here are the goals.

Carling Cup Final

Manchester United vs Tottenham
Location : Wembley Stadium

Did you know Manchester United and Tottenham have met 6 times in the League Cup? Did you know Tottenham, the holders, won 5 of those 6 games? Now who are the favourites?
Sir Alex Ferguson has promised starts to Wellbeck and Gibson - with Ronaldo, Rooney and Giggs likely to be in the starting 11. Ferguson has confessed that the upcoming League game with Newcastle is more important to his side than this game - although it is important to win to "keep the winning mentality". For Harry Redknapp's Tottenham, the strongest possible lineup will be fielded - though it will be without injured King, cup-tied Palacios, Keane, Cudicini and Chimnonda and on-loan Manchester United player Frazier Campbell - basically leaving you with the underachieving squad who subjected Spurs to a relegation battle.
Although Tottenham may want this Cup more than United, the immortality that comes win winning an unprecedented 5 trophies (World Club Cup won, League all but won, FA Cup and Champions League still availinle) may drive characters like Wayne Rooney to produce that one spark, one bit of magic at any time. Ryan Giggs will become only the seventh player to feature in 5 League Cup finals. Ferguson will want to become only the fourth manager to win 3 League Cup trophies. Clearly, personal incentives could be the ultimate motivation for a United triumph.
Tottenham are also not without drive. They will be unwilling to terminate their fairytale reign as League Cup champions - especially against the World Champions. Roman Pavlyuvhenko will be playing for his whole country when he becomes the first ever Russian to partake in a League Cup Final.

I can see Manchester United being way to strong for Tottenham in this one. Too many magicians all over the pitch with too many reasons not to play well should see the Red Devils over the line. Even the United youngsters will have a point to prove in the other Theatre of Dreams - Wembley Stadium.

Prediction

Manchester United 1 : 0 Tottenham

UEFA Champions League Predctions

Real Madrid 2 - 0 Liverpool

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium could prove to overwhelming for a Liverpool side minus Steven Gerrard. Fernando Torres will be given a torrid time in his Madrid return (sort of) and the capacity stadium could roar their side on to a comfortable victory.

Chelsea 1 - 1 Juventus

Juventus, with genius' of the caliber of Alessandro Del Piero, know every trick in the Champions League book. The greatest trick : score an away goal. Guus Hiddink will be desperate to avoid defeat in what could be Chelsea's last shot at silverware this season.

Sporting Lisbon 2 - 3 Bayern Munich

There's always one game that produces goals aplenty - and this is it for me. Bayern may be short of form in Germany but in the Champions League they are a much more formidable, free-playing side. Ribery, Klose and Toni all have the ability to put a lackluster Sporting defence to the sword. The home side will rely heavily on talismanic Moutinho and top dog Liedson. Derlei has also shown good form this campaign.

Villareal 1 - 0 Panathanaikos

These two sides have already exceeded the expectations of many a football pundit and now square off against each other to fill the underdog seat in the final 8. Good recent Panathanaikos form combined with Villareal injury worries all but cancels out the home advantage. This being said, I still think Villareal have the upper hand in terms of experience at this stage. Narrow home win.

UEFA Champions League Preview

Inter Milan vs Manchester United
Location : San Siro

As we all know, in recent times Manchester United have conquered all English opposition thrown their way without too much concern. A 7 point lead at the top of the Premier League is proof of United's dominance. Having mastered all comers English, it is only right that Sir Alex and his men challenge themselves with a new countries top dog. This being Italy and Inter Milan.
The Red Devils 7 point lead looks more or less insurmountable, and United untouchable - so imagine how the Italians feel about Serie A leader Inter Milan and their 9 point lead. Jose Mourinho's boys have recorded a recent victory over city rivals AC Milan, a game in which the Special One kept up his record of using all 3 allocated substitutes in every game of his Inter reign.
The Nerazzuri look set to start with the "brilliant" (his words not mine - I'd have said "masterful") Zlatan Ibrahimovic and L'Imperatore ("The Emperor") Adriano up front. Nicknames aside, Adriano has had a tough few years. He has been criticised for his weight by many a football critic, accused of having a poor work ethic by many a "team-mate" and chastised heavily for his rock-star lifestyle. A falling out with former coach Roberto Mancini saw the Brazilian dropped and sent to Sao Paolo on a loan deal where he eventually regained his form and confidence. Mancini was then replaced by Jose Mourinho who stated he had no qualms with playing Adriano - if he was one of the best two strikers in the squad. Adriano will have a rare opportunity to prove himself as one of the biggest names in world football once again in this game.
Inter will probably be without center-backs Walter Samuel and Marco Materazzi. The squad's impressive depth however means top talent Christian Chivu and pace merchant Ivan Cordoba will hold the back two positions. "The Icon" Maicon and impressive young talent Davide Santon will likely marshal the flanks in their full-back roles. The Italian champions have an impressive array of quality to choose from in their usual tough-to-break-down midfield. Zanetti, Cambiasso, Muntari and Stankovic are the obvious choices to form a rock solid diamond behind the powerful strike force. Inter Milan were wholly unimpressive in the group stages - their 8 points knocking Werder Bremen out of the cup by just one point.Away from home, Inter scored 6 and conceded 5 in three games. At home, they scored 2 and conceded 2. Hardly impressive figures and possibly an indication that Inter Milan will look for the 1-0 home win.
Manchester United have vowed to go for the win in this game - and why not. The champions (of England, Europe and indeed the World) have had a sensational run of late seeing them all but secure another Premier League title. This will now allow Sir Alex Ferguson to focus on a trophy he has been infatuated with since 26th May 1999 (think about it).
United's reported defensive crisis has recently worsened - Vidic, Neville, Evans, Brown and Rafael all out of this game. John O'Shea may have a key part to play at cenere-back - should the utility man be passed fit to play (currently doubtful). Evra will start at left-back with Fabio da Silva being pushed for a right-back start. Darren Fletcher is the only other full-back option with Owen Hargreaves still on the sidelines. The increasingly impressive midfield partnership of Carrick and Scholes should be given the nod with Ronaldo on the wing. I just wonder if Ji-Sung Park may be given the nod ahead of Nani or Giggs on account of the Korean's energetic nature and tracking back skills - helping out young Fabio on the right. This will restrict Cristiano Ronaldo to his (marginally) weaker left hand side - setting up an intriguing Ronaldo vs Maicon battle. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Portugese and the Korean switch flanks to cause havoc with 18 year old Davide Santon. Wayne Rooney should be started and I will be interested to see if Ferguson benches the often lax Berbatov in favour of Carlos Tevez (who is better equipped to deal with pacey center-back Ivan Cordoba).
Many people describe Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson as the two best managers in the world. Every Manchester United fan remembers the anger they felt to the then obscure Portugese manager as he sprinted down the touchline after Costinha slotted home Tim Howard's sloppy parried save knocking United out of the Champions League almost exactly 5 years ago. There are more mini-battles to this game than meet the eye. Fergie vs Jose, Carrick vs Cambiasso and Rooney vs Ibrahimovic to name but a few. Both sides have sublime strengths and recently-enforced weaknesses, though at the same time, both sides have such contrasting styles of play.
The pundits will tell you sides must win their home tie in a knockout competition. I'm telling you Inter Milan just need to try not to lose it. If United get the balance right they will overwhelm Inter with their retention of the ball, their stretching of the play and their relentless bombardment of Julio Cesar's goal. My warning to Mourinho is Manchester United cannot get knocked out today but they can all but get through.
Inter will try not to get blown out of the water and will want to keep this game as low key as possible. The odd goal either way may settle it.

Prediction
Inter Milan 0 : 1 Manchester United

Manchester United vs Blackburn

The day's late kick-off sees League leaders Man Utd take on Blackburn. Sam Allardyce's mind games have started early, the big boss claiming the Champions are not unstoppable. Manchester United keeper Edwin van der Sar is now just 89 minuites away from setting the European record for consecutive clean sheets.
Manchester United are without John O'Shea for the clash, though Wayne Rooney and Rafael are in line for starts. Evergreen Ryan Giggs is back in contention for a start.
Blackburn miss Christopher Samba through suspension and Danny Simpson is ineligible against his parent club.
If Blackburn are to halt United's charge, they will have to be the first of 14 teams to breech their ever-changing defence. It may be said that United's only weaknesses lie in the occasional lack of pace in the midfield - though this is often taken care of by back-tracking Tevez/Rooney. The inexperience of Rafael may provide an avenue of attack for Rovers, although the young Brazilian has taken well to life at Old Trafford. I'd advise Sam Allardyce to set his side out to be difficult to break down and then look for a goal on the break. Cristiano Ronaldo has been unconvincing for me on the left - leaving his attacking threat slightly tamed. This has resulted in unconventional right-sided play from Ji-Sung Park, or whoever else is told to play there. The longer United's defensive run goes on for, the more pressure and importance their is on it's breaking. It is therefore important for United to score early to lessen the importance of any defensive breach.
Sir Alex Ferguson may opt to rest one or two regulars with an eye on an upcoming grudge-match with Jose Mourinho and Inter Milan. We may therefore see Vidic earn a well deserved break in exchange for Johnny Evans getting match practice (Evans will play against Inter Milan due to Vidic's European suspension).
A win would put United 8 points clear (Liverpool play Sunday vs Man City) and I feel the Red Devils are on too great a run to be halted at home to Blackburn. I do however think United's defensive record is in more danger than ever.

Prediction
Manchester United 3 : 1 Blackburn

Saturday 21st February : Previews

Aston Villa vs Chelsea

The day's early kick-off sees the Premier League's "best of the rest" fight it out for 3rd place. A win for Aston Villa would see them 3rd, tied with Liverpool - at least for a day (Liverpool meeting Man City on Sunday), or a 9 goal win would see Aston Villa climb to 2nd place (never know). Chelsea know that a loss could see them fall 13 points off the title race and, perhaps more importantly, could allow Arsenal to reduce their deficit from 4th place to just 2 points.
Aston Villa (who could go 5 points behind leaders Manchester United with a win) look to extend their unbeaten home record to 10 games - the type of feat Chelsea were once very familiar with. The Villains have taken 16 points from their last 6 League games - second to just Manchester United (18) in the form tables. During this time Villa have been slightly subdued in front of goal (scoring just 7), but magnificent at the back leaking only 2 goals. Milner and Heskey face fitness tests but life seems to be good at Villa Park. A record of no losses in 13 games is testament to that.
We're all familiar with the chaos at Stamford Bridge this season and are all quietly intrigued to see how on-field performances are effected. Guus Hiddink's boys have picked up 8 points in their last 6 Premier League games and (despite Guus' insistence) are more or less out of the title hunt. Champions League qualification must be the priority now with this 6 pointer being a huge part of securing that. Hiddink may just have an eye on this seasons Champions League - Juventus coming up. The Blues' side hasn't really clicked all too well of late and the addition of Ricardo Quaresma may further confuse matters. It is well known that Quaresma was unhappy at Inter and wanted out. The reason he chose Chelsea was simple - Luis Felipe Scolari. Guus Hiddink - a very methodical, selective manager - would have no qualms (normally) in leaving out a player he felt didn't fit the system he wanted to employ. Things may be very much different now that he is not once but twice directly under the payroll of Roman Abramovich who, in light of his recent reported $9bn losses, cannot miss out on another potential gold-mine player (Qauresma in the "Rnaldo market"). Hiddink therefore must pick his side according to (or at least in conjunction with) what the Russian billionaire would like to see on the turf at the Bridge - once again bringing up an interesting debate (for another day) about football as a business, not a sport. Just how "in charge" of Chelsea is Guus Hiddink. Is he just a show-manager until the season's end?
Chelsea have won their last 7 League games against Midland opposition (their last lost vs Villa in 2007) although records are clearly there to be broken. Whilst Chelsea's attack seemed impressive in the early running of this season, the Blues have scored just 6 in their last 6 Premier League games and conceded a shocking 8. Chelsea really are in a downwards spiral and this fixture may just come at the wrong time for them. The Londoners are without Ashley Cole, Alex and Ricardo Carvalho so will have an even shakier defence than usual. With Bosingwa bombing down the wing, Wayne Bridge bombing down the M6 and Branislav Ivanovic severely lacking match experience, it seems this match will contain goals.
It's not often that these two sides have met and Aston Villa have been favourites, but for me they are. The 9/4 price given by bookies is ridiculous, as is Chelsea's 5/4. Even if these prices were reversed, I'd say Villa were underestimated. This game is coming at the wrong time for Chelsea and the right time for Villa. In a game where a draw is no use to either side, Villa's confidence in their attacking prowess should shine through with their rock solid back line stubbing out the threat of Chelsea's off-form forwards.

Prediction
Aston Villa 2 : 1 Chelsea

Brazil vs Italy

Brazil are being tipped as favourites for what the press have dubbed "the World Derby". The World Champions 2002 will square off with the World Champions 2006. Should Italy avoid defeat tonight at the Emirates Stadium they will set a new world record of 32 international games unbeaten - a statistic meticulous mastermind Marcello Lippi will be all to aware of. Dunga and Brazil will look to play their usual free-flowing samba football to light up a murky London sky - hoping to add to the 16 goals they've scored in their last 6 games. Italy have scored just 9 in their last 6 games but can rely on their ever-ready defense to bail them out of sticky encounters.
Kaka and Luis Fabiano will miss out through injury whilst Amauri has been blocked from participating by Juventus (boo). Pato and Ronaldinho will likely be handed starts whilst Gilberto Silva could have a North London reunion.
For the Champions, Daniele De Rossi may have to sit this game out whilst Gilardino may be told to lead the line on his own (long...ball....yawn).
Potentially, this could be a sensational game exhibiting some of the most exciting players in world football. More realistically, Lippi and his boys will be playing for a (metaphorical) point - hoping tomorrows headlines are instead taken up by news of Italy's heroic 32nd consecutive avoidance of defeat.

Needless to say, this game needs an early goal. Both sides have a very contrasting style which normally means it's up to the star players to impose their team's will on the opponents. I just think Brazil will have too much for the Italians who may rely to heavily on their midfield line holding back the offensive Brazilians.

Prediction : Brazil 1:0

West Ham vs Manchester United

Manchester United bid for their 13th successive Premier League clean sheet today at Upton Park whilst West Ham aim to make it 7 League games without defeat. This is set to be a close clash.
Manchester United have only won 1 of their last 9 games in London though Sir Alex Ferguson claims "it does not concern" him. Why should it? The Red Devils have looked rock-solid at the back despite having to constantly chop and change the back 4. Such antics are no longer required as all the first choice defenders bar Gary Neville (or Rafael da Silva if your ambitious)are available. Even so, the troublesome right-back role cam be filled by the returning Wes Brown. United's strike force is bolstered by the returning Wayne Rooney - bad news for the ever impressive work-horse Carlos Tevez who looks set to lose his place in the starting line-up to his English equivalent. United's midfield will contain Cristiano Ronaldo (joint 2nd top scorer in the League with 11 goals despite not hitting top gear) and Michael Carrick who is having the season of his life. Carrick may get the chance to impress Fabio Cappello who make drop in on both this game and the North London derby - the venues less than 30 minutes apart. The final two midfield spots for the Champions will be filled by a combination of Park, Giggs, Scholes and Fletcher.
A win for West Ham really heats things up in terms of European prospects as the Hammers could go 7th. Gianfranco will send his boys out with the same no-fear attitude he took as a player saying; "everyone has weaknesses and it's up to us to exploit that. We are very confident right now. We play at home and we want to win the game." If they are going to win the game, it will be without Dyer, Gabbidon and Ashton - though England's goal-machine Carlton Cole will start.
Of late, it has seemed as if one goal is all Manchester United need to win is one goal. With this potent attack, I wouldn't back against them getting it. Manchester United are like a shark with the scent of blood when it comes to regaining the top spot in the Premier League so I cannot back against them winning today.

Tottenham vs Arsenal

The North London derby is always packed with goals and excitement. This instance should be no different. A win would put the Gunners 3 points behind 4th place Chelsea, whilst a loss would leave them 6 points off that elusive Champions League spot. This appears to be an area to watch as either one of Arsenal, Chelsea or Villa will miss the top 4 come the end of the season. A win for Spurs could see them go 13th and 4 points above the dreaded drop zone. Arsenal are without Abou Diaby but welcome new boy Andrei Arshavin to the squad. Tottenham miss suspendee David Bentley and the injured Alan Hutton - though new/old boy Robbie Keane is back to lead his new/old side.
Arsenal may give Andrei Arshavin a run out but certainly will not start the Russian. He severely lacks match fitness and cannot risk injury. There may be a warm feeling in the heart of every football fan as Eduardo looks set to return. He probably wont get a kick in this game, but looks like being included in the squad. We all wish him the best and it will be great to see the Croat taking his applause - even from the ol' North London rivals if he is named in the squad.
Nobody can forget the recent 4-4 draw between these two sides in their last League meeting (during Spurs' mini-revival in Redknapp's honeymoon period) and neutrals will be hoping for similar fireworks today. Villa and Chelsea fans alike will be hoping for Spurs to pull of an upset, whilst all teams involved in the relegation scrap will be praying for a comprehensive Arsenal victory.
It will be interesting to see if Tottenham play anything like the, erm..., old Tottenham after re-signing the likes of Chimbonda, Defoe and Keane. Perhaps Redknapp wants to inject some of the Carling Cup winning spirit back into the underachievers.
Home advantage/fairytale potential leads me to believe there may just be an upset in the air here.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

"El not-so-clasico" on paper is destined for a draw. Both sides want a win, but can't afford a loss in what has effectively become a top of the table six-pointer. Liverpool and Chelsea are locked on 48 points and trail Manchester United by 5 points after the Champions notched up a 12th successive Premier League clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Everton.
Liverpool are unbeaten at home this season whilst Chelsea have lost just once on the road - the 3-0 demolition at Old Trafford.
Alonso, Kuyt and Riera both look set for starts - very good news for Chelsea for whom Carvalho misses out. Salomon Kalou is fit to play but may be overlooked despite his two midweek goals in favour of Didier Drogba.
It will be interesting to see what happens when two teams who can't defend high crosses square off against each other. I'm guessing the "0-0 derby" will either be won by one well executed Chelsea set play or will be a draw. I can't see how Rafa's ultra-defensive 4-5-1 formation will be able to bounce back from going a goal down to Scolari's 4-3-3 machine.

Giles Barnes to Fulham

Highly rated Derby 20 year old Giles Barnes is Fulham's latest January acquisition, joining the London club on a loan deal until the end of the season. The Cottagers will have an option to buy the youngster who is looking to re-establish himself as a bright prospect of English football - and possibly rekindle his England call-up chances.

Good signing Fulham.

Transfer Talk - Top 5

As we now approach the climax to another window of opportunity for managers to add to their squads (or in many teams' cases, erm...get rid) it is an opportunity to evalute what each team has done to ensure that they finish the season in a position where they can achieve their targets - whether that be winning the league, staying up or maybe even securing that elusive InterToto Cup position...

Of course in times like these where money comes at a premium in most places, we have been hard pressed to find any big transfer dealings of late. Suffice to say, it certainly hasn't been boring. From Man City's big money pursuit of Kaka to Bolton's quite extraodinarily weird chase for the apparently 'destined for greatness' Miguel Veloso, we've seen a lot in this window aside from the signing of contracts...

Manchester United - Quiet, unfussy and relatively inactive are three words you would not normally associate with the reigning champions, but that is exactly what's happened this January. After wrapping up deals for promising Serbians Tosic and Ljajic with work permits finally secured, Ferguson officially declared Man Utd as 'finished' with regards to transfers. And despite rumours of a last ditch bid to derail Spurs' bid for Wilson Palacios (most probably City) he has stayed true to his word. Few can blame him. With the squad at his disposal and the attacking talents clicking into gear alongside the seemingly unbreakable defence, United look set for their third League in a row. Few would bet against them for the Champions League, and they also have a Carling Cup final to deal with...sheesh...

Liverpool - It is perhaps a surprise that the normally busy Benitez hasn't delved into the market to add to his squad in the window, but early indications suggest he was preoccupied talking about 'fachts'...anyway...Liverpool have led the league for much of the season and an admirable knack of picking up results when not playing particularly well has led supporters to think that this could finally, finally be a glorious year. Sadly they seem to have lost their way a little over the post-Christmas period, with a recent run of draws unfortunately coinciding with a return to form of a certain other team in red...Benitez however remains undeterred and will stick with what he has, barring a last minute buy. Speculation has been more rife about possible departures from Merseyside, with Pennant departing on loan to Pompey (he wasn't much use anyway really) and £20m summer signing Keane facing intense scrutiny over his poor performances - Tottenham are understood to have launched a bid to re-sign the Irish forward...joke of a transfer policy from a joke of a club I know, but more on that later.....

Chelsea - You know times are strange when Chelsea are strapped for cash...and well, times are strange. Having said that they have a little to spend at the very least with Wayne Bridge's move to Eastlands raking in a reported £11m, and the priority now appears to be finding a backup goalkeeper to Cech following Cudicini's departure...well you wouldn't want Hilario would you...anyway. Marco Storari appears to be the target with a move expected to be finalised within days, but other than that...it's all a bit quiet at Stamford Bridge. Scolari publicised the growing need for another forward earlier in the window, and that was before Didier Drogba's incredible bout of rubbishness kicked in. Despite this, Chelsea remain in a fairly decent position in the league and with a tasty tie against Juventus coming up in February, it's all to play for...if Scolari can get his current troops firing again then there is no reason why they cannot achieve.

Aston Villa - The latest in a line of potential gatecrashers into the top four, but this lot have staying power. O'Neill has moulded his side into an efficient, pacy and hardworking unit that have ground out big results this season - 9 away wins suggest that they are very much a force to be reckoned with. With their current position as sitting comfortably within the top four, Arsenal look to be the ones most under threat from a resurgent Villa, and with the gap at five points it certainly looks to be all to play for. One concern that many have with Villa's push for Europe is the apparent lack of depth beyond an impressive first XI, and it looks to be well founded. However their one major signing looks to be a key one, the acquisition of much maligned (but very effective) England striker Heskey from Wigan should soothe the blow of losing Carew to injury. Many however cite the potential loss of Agbonlahor or Young to injury later this season as a potential sticking point given their key roles in the push so far...it remains to be seen whether O'Neill delves into the market for more...and then we will see in May what comes of it.

Arsenal - Well there's nowhere better to start than the increasingly boring, tedious, dull, zzzzz pursuit of Andrei Arshavin...so let's do just that. Arsene Wenger has looked on with increasing concern as his young Gunners continue to play silky one touch passing around the box but are continually frustrated by stubborn defences. In the absence of Walcott, Rosicky and captain Fabregas it is hardly any wonder they have struggled (especially when the replacement is a certain inconsistent oddball Abou Diaby), but Wenger has recognised the need for 'spark' and has made his move (well he made a move ages ago but this has been so drawn out and tedious) for Russia's star man from Euro 2008, Zenit playmaker Arshavin. Trouble is, when you are dealing with a bunch of monkeys it's likely you end up looking like...a bunch of monkeys, so with Zenit's conflicting messages and the increasingly irritating agent Dennis Lachter, it's hardly any wonder this transfer's lasted so long. It appears there may be a final conclusion some time soon, with Wenger reported to have claimed the deal is '90% done'...however Arsenal fans will expect a message saying something completely different come tomorrow. Aside from that, with the injuries to key players coming at the worst possible time and Villa's impressive form causing many to scratch their heads and wonder whether the Gunners are destined for 'Thursday Nights, Channel 5'. Make no mistake about it, the final months of the season promise much.

Premier League : Week In Review

Though a Manchester United fan, I'm growing increasingly fond of Rafael Benitez. In fact, he's officially "mug of the week" for pulling his two, for want of a better word, "best" players off during Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Wigan. After the match, Rafa stated they were "tired". You can draw you're own conclusions but with a title at stake club captain Steven Gerrard would probably have played through the pain.
The fun doesn't stop there though, equally incompetent Brazil nut Luis Felipe Scolari had Drogba on the bench for the most part against 'Boro and even risked starting Salomon Kalou. The latter risk payed dividends beyond belief as the (wrong) Ivorian put the ball in the net not once but twice. Two typical Chelsea set plays made the difference. Shocking.
The week got weirder. Emile Heskey scored.
Business continued as usual for both Arsenal and Manchester United - picking up a draw (1-1) and a win (5-0) respectively. The Gunners are unbeaten in 2009 and Arsene Wenger refuses to admit his side are out of the title race. Honestly. He put the 1-1 draw with Everton down as "a point gained". Sir Alex Ferguson got another one over on mind-game-maestro Rafael Benitez as the champions cruised home against 10 man West Brom (though the Robinson red card has since been overturned). The Red Devils were looking something like their best racking up an 11th successive clean sheet in the Premier League. A real testament to both Ferguson and van der Sar - making United's ever changing back 4 look rock solid.

Elsewhere, there were good wins for Villa and Man City - the Villains could move up to 2nd with Chelsea and Liverpool clashing in the "0-0 derby" on Sunday. ex-Fulham Bullard looked fairly bright for new side Hull - but his 2nd half appearance couldn't help Hull's relentless spiral continuing - their honeymoon start to Premier League life now seems a lifetime ago.

Chelseas vs Stoke

Big Phil Scolari has described Stoke as the "best set piece team in the world". And, in recent times, his side have been the worst at defending them. Chaos in the defence and the dressing room saw little Southend dream of an upset against the mighty Russian giants before having their innocent hearts broken. Now, Scolari looks to take complete charge at the Bridge, telling players "if you want to go, go!" Cole and Deco will miss out for Chelsea - though Malouda and Carvalho return. Drogba may play defending on....how Scolari's feeling. Reports have also suggested Anelka is on Scolari's hit list for questioning tactics - as, according to ever-reliable fact merchant The Sun, is Carvalho. Maybe di Santo will be handed a start? Maybe Belleti will not be used as a super sub. The life and times of Scolari kicks off at 15:00.

Hull vs Arsenal, Sunderland vs Aston Villa

Hull beat Arsenal at the Emirates earlier this season though Wenger claims this match is "not about revenge". Hull may have Manchester United on-loan striker Manucho ready for this game forming an interesting attacking partnership with the likes of King and Cousin - supported by Geovanni. Arsenal are without William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre through injury, and give a fitness test to Alex Song. Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky remain sidelined.
Hull will fancy their chances in front of an ever hopeful home crowd. Arsenal however know a win will - just about - keep them in the title race, 5 points behind Liverpool.

Aston Villa have a tough task away at Sunderland - though they will class themselves as strong favourites. "World-class" Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor will look to overpower the might of Sunderland top-marksman Djibril Cisse. This promises to be an open game with both sides clawing for points - though for very different reasons.

Bolton vs Manchester United : Premier League Preview - 17th January 2009

4 of the big 5 (yes, I include Villa) compete in todays's matches - all with potentially tricky games ahead.

Manchester Unted have been hit hard by injuries in their run up to an away day at Bolton. Ferdinand, Evra, Evans, Tevez and Rooney may all miss out - giving the World Champions problems at the back. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gary Neville shoved into a central-defensive role along side Vidic - Rafael and O'Shea as full backs. Midfield may have to become a creative 5-piece with Ronaldo and Park/Nani marshalling the flanks and mastermind Scholes, born again central midfielder Giggs and the ever impressive Michael Carrick as the midfield 3. Berbatov could at last get a chance to lead the line on his own which, with support from the likes of the Player of The Year, could be deadly.
Bolton are one of the worst sides in the League form-wise and lost the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season. New man Ariza Makulaka may look to turn these fortunes around by announcing himself infront of his home fans against the best team on Earth.
The signs for Bolton are ominous. The champions have conceded none in nine in the League. One of Chelsea's phenomenal record. Bolton have lost their last 3 League games whilst Manchester United are the form team in the League with 16 points in 6.

City direction cast aside with £100m Kaká move

When Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, or the unmistakable Kaká, crowned a glorious campaign with the prestigious Fifa World Player of the Year and Ballon D'Or awards in 2007, even an artist blessed with the cutting vision and devastating creative foresight of the Brazilian himself could not have envisaged the events of the past days which have captivated the football world and threatened to revolutionise the game as we know it. The fleet footed playmaker, revered by coaches and players alike, had been the subject of an incredible nine-figure bid from...Manchester City.

Of course, as we know, this does not even begin to scratch the surface of the goings on at Eastlands ever since September 1, 2008, when sensationally on transfer deadline day, the club was sold to Abu Dhabi United Group for Investment and Development, a consortium from the Middle East with plans that would have left even a certain Russian billionaire scratching his head. The City faithful could be forgiven for feelings of joy, ecstacy or just sheer disbelief, reinforced straight away with the capture of Samba star Robinho from Real Madrid for a staggering £32.5m, and the well documented bid for Dimitar Berbatov, ultimately ending in disappointment as United sealed the deal. However, this latest potential coup has the capacity to leave all previous actions floundering in the shade.

Despite all this, however outrageous it may sound, it is still very feasible to bring into question the short term intentions of Mark Hughes, Garry Cook and ADUG - simply by looking at the Premier League table. Despite the instant impact of Robinho and the consistency of a certain Stephen Ireland, City remain perilously close to the relegation zone - just two points from dropping into it - and knowing the unpredictable nature of the finest league in the world this season with just 8 points seperating the top 10, it is very plausible that they will find themselves sucked into a roller-coaster ride of a relegation battle as the season draws on. Certainly not the impact Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan had hoped to have made. It is now that City's intentions and short-term plans be questioned - is Kaká the answer to dragging a so far very average team out of a relegation battle? Certainly people would say they could not suggest better, but the Brazilian with a glittering CV is used to challenging for Champions League trophies - could he really be the answer when a City team leaking goals needs a win at the Britannia Stadium?

Another factor overlooked amidst the shock of this transfer is Mark Hughes' - or should we say the Sheikh's - other moves in this January window. Clearly the fans want another marquee name to go alongside those of Robinho and any others that will inevitably be targetted in the summer, and who better than Kaká or another mooted target, Fernando Torres? Whilst negotiating a record breaking deal for possibly the most talented player in Europe, City have also turned to that world beater...Craig Bellamy. Hmm. As well as questioning why on earth they want anything to do with the hot-headed Welsh international who failed to make an impact at Liverpool, a club that City hope to eclipse in the near future...one has to ask - what direction are the club looking to go? Who does Mark Hughes really want to sign? Are these his targets? Do the Arabs even want Hughes at the helm?

It is hard to believe that amidst the fever of potentially one of the greats arriving to ply his trade in England, so many questions still need to be raised.

The Kaka Saga

I'm a Manchester United fan. As a result, I obviously don't favour Man City. But, who would not want to see Kaka exhibiting his skills in the greatest League on Earth week in, week out. Whether you love it or hate it, you can't deny that the prospect is exciting.
Crazy sums of money have been suggested to prise the former World Player of the year away from the San Siro - and rightfully so. You get what you pay for (unless your Sir Alex Ferguson in which case you either get double (Cantona, Ronaldo, Vidic) or half (Veron, Berbatov, Tevez(?)).

But £100 million (think about that figure) is a hell of a lot of money. Surely Manchester City could do a Robinho style move and get another big name for (comparatively) small money. Well, considering Real Madrid sold 1 million "Beckham" shirts in 2003, I'd say this galactico style signing might be a smart move. Real Madrid were almost instantly able to confirm profit made on the Beckham signing due due to shirt sales, constant full match attendance, increased pay days for touring abroad etc. Now I know Kaka isn't David Beckham. He's probably not as marketable. Maybe not as recognisable (maybe) as say, a Ronaldinho. But, with Manchester City's already strong and growing support base abroad (China especially), this signing would surely capture both attention and headlines.

If Manchester City want to be a global force to be reckoned with, they must win both points on the field and inches in newspapers.
As for the reported £500,000 a week Kaka will be offered.....what credit crunch?

Manchester United vs Chelsea

Manchester United vs Chelsea 11/01/2009
Kick Off : 16:00
Venue : Old Trafford

This, in recent times, has been the fixture that United and Cheslea fans look forward two. Undisputedly the top two teams in England of the last 5 years collide at Old Trafford. Cheslea know a win will all but eradicate the gap to leaders Liverpool, whilst United need to turn games-in-hand into points. When the giants collided earlier this season, late Kalou equaliser canceled out Park's early tap in finish to send both sides home relatively happy. Now, there's more on the line as both teams look to turn good seasons into great ones.
Alex Ferguson has a disappointing tendency to field workaholic Ji-Sung Park in the big games, sacrificing the flair and sparkle of Nani, or the level-headed Ryan Giggs. Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra return after injuries and suspensions respectively. Long term absentee Owen Hargreaves is still on the treatment table and Wes Brown also sits out.
Cheslea are boosted by two returning big names; John Terry and Michael Ballack - both previously suspended. It is as of yet unknown as to whether Jose Bosingwa will play. The increasingly impressive Florent Malouda misses out.
A draw here for Manchester United wouldn't be so bad. It would still mean United could go within touching distance of Liverpool - although they will relinquish the chance to go top after games-in hand. Chelsea cannot afford another slip up as in recent weeks Liverpool have been let of the hook by the Blues matching their poop points return. A win here puts Chelsea 1 point behind Liverpool and makes them Premier League favourites. Chelsea must be weary that a loss here puts Aston Villa one point behind them with equal games played - Arsenal a further 3 points back. A loss today could have spiralling consequences for the Blues. Expect Scolari to go for the win.

Possible Lineups

Manchester United - 1 d. v. E. Sar, 2 G. Neville, 15 N. Vidic, 23 J. Evans, 3 P. Evra, 7 C. Ronaldo, 16 M. Carrick, 18 P. Scholes, 13 JS. Park, 10 W. Rooney, 9 D. Berbatov

Chelsea : 1 P. Cech, 17 J. Bosingwa, 26 J. Terry, 33 R. Alex, 3 A. Cole, 21 S. Kalou, 13 M. Ballack, 12 O. J. Mikel, 8 F. Lampard, 10 J. Cole, 11 D. Drogba

Rafa's Rant - my two cents

I disagreed with Rafa saying Uniteda are nervous. Nervous teams draw with Stoke.
I disagree with Rafa saying United are playing mind games before pulling out a piece of paper with his pre-written mind games.
I think it's hypocritical of him to criticise Sir Alex Ferguson for having a go at Martin Atkinson moments after he suggested Steve Benntett is biased.
Also, Rafa says the Reds pressure referees to give decisions...does he mean decisons like when Gerrard dived in the last minuite to get a penalty and steal a point from Athletico?
Finally, isn't there irony in complaining about complaining?

Just my thoughts.
